Revenue Attribution and Acquisition Economics

The funding decision

Use this play when deciding whether to fund, scale, repair, or pause an acquisition source. The goal is not perfect credit assignment. It is a trustworthy view of which investments contribute to right-fit opportunities and economically valuable work.

Do not copy an industry cost-per-lead benchmark or let an ad platform's reported conversion become the company revenue number.

Remodeler economics change the answer

One larger remodeling project can justify substantial acquisition cost, while the wrong project can consume estimating and design capacity without becoming good work. Economics therefore depend on gross profit, close rate, project fit, service area, backlog, sales effort, and conversion lag, not contract value alone.

Keep these layers separate: planned budget, accounting actuals, platform spend, tracked response, raw leads, qualified opportunities, signed work, recognized revenue, and modeled influence. Direct attribution, self-reported source, and sales context can disagree without one automatically being fraudulent.

Increase precision only when it helps

Minimum: Preserve a source on every inquiry, define qualified outcomes, reconcile spend to actuals, and review cost per qualified opportunity alongside project fit.

Growing team: Use a controlled campaign/link taxonomy, meaningful CRM stages and dates, call/form evidence, lost reasons, and cohort reporting. Cover offline sources such as mailers, signage, events, and referrals without inventing precision.

Advanced: Model allowable acquisition cost from contribution economics and capacity; use ranges and sensitivity analysis; return verified offline outcomes to channel systems where consent and platform rules allow. Compare sources at equivalent cohort maturity.

For campaign links, use a controlled source, medium, campaign, and meaningful content or term identifier without exposing private information in the URL. Preserve the original source separately from the most recent interaction. For offline work, use an appropriate mix of a dedicated path, QR code, tracking number, promotion identifier, and carefully worded self-report. A referral, sign, event, or print placement may never produce a reliable click trail; keep the evidence available and label the interpretation honestly.

Platform attribution, analytics, self-report, and Sales context can disagree. Do not silently force them into agreement. Document the rule used for the decision and its confidence.

Keep source ownership explicit

Measurement owns definitions, reconciliation, confidence, and economics. Operations maintains identifiers and integrations. Sales records qualification and outcomes. Paid and other channel owners explain spend and interventions. Leadership decides allocation and acceptable risk.

When to scale, repair, or pause

Review spend, raw and qualified demand, qualification rate, stage progression, time to outcome, signed work, expected contribution, lost reasons, and data confidence. Scaling deserves another look when tracking is materially broken, qualified outcomes are absent, capacity cannot absorb demand, spend is unreconciled, or the economics require an unsupported close-rate or margin assumption.

Record the adopted allocation decision, owner, assumptions, evidence link, and next review in the Strategy Menu. Keep forecasts labeled as models until actual outcomes verify them.
